The school year is divided into four units: Personal Narrative/Myth & Fable; Central Ideas in Non-fiction/Informational Text; Novels/Literary Analysis; and Poetry/Monologue/Drama. These units are designed to align with the Common Core Standards to ensure 21st century readiness for every student. Students will learn to think critically, problem solve, think creatively, communicate thoughtfully, collaborate with fellow peers, and be global citizens. Homework varies based on the unit, and may include writing, reading, research, vocabulary work, and projects.

Reading
Along with the Common Core Units, reading will be assigned. We will read several novels as a class this year. Students will read, create a Response to Literature piece, and earn points toward their individually assigned goals. Independent reading has been proven to be an essential element to growth as a reader.
